I’ve interacted with a lot of people my age and younger over the past couple of years. When I ask what God is doing in their life, they normally give me the same answer:
God just has me in a season of doing nothing . . . I’m just waiting on and pursuing Him.
Several years ago I felt like God was leading me to do this as well. It sounded good and godly in theory, but it was a cover up. The truth is God had put dreams in my heart. But every time I started pursuing these dreams, I would get afraid and give up.
I say this lovingly, but there’s a good chance your “waiting on the Lord” is a disguise for “I am afraid.”
It’s easy to just say, “Get over your fear!” but shouldn’t we ask, Why are we so afraid? I believe the answer is found in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25). In this story, the master (God) gives three of his servants talents to steward. Two of the servants multiply their talents, but the third buries his. When the master asks the third servant to give a summary of what he did with the talent, here is how the servant replies:
“‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’” (Matthew 25:24–25 NLT)
The servant believed the master was harsh so he became afraid and hid his talent. Fear oftentimes takes root because of our perception of God. We are afraid because we believe God is harsh and looking for a chance to punish us. This belief will cause us to hide our gifts, our talents, our passions, and our dreams.
But here’s the truth: God is not against you—He is for you. He knows you are going to face challenges in life, so the most frequent command He gives us is, “Do not be afraid.”
If you have found yourself struggling with fear, I encourage you to step out in faith. As you do, feed on God’s love and faithfulness (a sign of His faith in you). You will learn how much courage God has put within you and how much God is for you!
P.S. Here is a little motivation as you face your fears.
